Characteristics of African Indigenous Education

This type of education can also be said to have nine key characteristics (MacOjong,
2008; Njoki et al., 2015; Ebot Ashu, 2016):
• It is a lifelong process
• It is community oriented,
• It is not dependent on literacy
• It places emphasis on practical learning
• The question of learning by doing is very important
• It is functional in the sense that the knowledge skills and values that are
imparted are relevant to the socio-economic, political and cultural activities of an
individual and the local community
• There were basically no formal exams at the end of a specific level of training
• The Holistic Nature
• It is a way to protect, preserve and develop the traditional indigenous skills and
cultures of Africa
