Get Involve in CCELMS Online Training Course for DEPUTIES AND MIDDLE MANAGERS
- Aims
The aim of this course is to develop knowledge, understanding and a critical perspective – based on evidence from the literature, inspection and the course members’ own research – of the qualities and strategies required by senior (e.g. deputies, vice-principals) and middle managers (e.g. heads of department, faculty, service) to improve the quality of teaching and learning and to raise standards in their areas of responsibility.
In particular, this module focuses on the changing roles, responsibilities and professional development of deputies, middle managers and senior management teams (or leadership groups), in schools and other educational organisations. Consequently, there will be a particular focus on shared or distributed leadership and leadership for learning. The assignment will be an analysis of an observation you will undertake in this area, the precise focus of which is for course members to decide. This module will aim to develop not the humanistic perspective on researching in leadership as in the last module (or Knowledge Domain as Ribbins and Gunter (2002) put it) but a more evaluative perspective will be fostered. An accompanying literature review will aim to develop a more critical perspective to reviewing the literature.
- Objectives
At the end of the module, the course members will be able:
- to articulate in a critical and analytical way the qualities and strategies required by senior and middle managers to improve the quality of teaching and learning and to raise standards in their areas of responsibility and, in particular, to develop strategies to identify, analyse and support weaker areas of responsibility;
- to articulate in a critical and analytical way the changes in the roles and responsibilities of senior and middle managers and the dilemmas these present;
- to articulate in a critical and analytical way the professional development needs of senior and middle managers and how these can be addressed;
- to articulate in a critical and analytical way the strategies for managing change that are available to senior and middle managers.
